Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the comprehensive care of patients before, during and after surgery and childbirth. Several types of anesthesia are available, including general anesthesia, sedation anesthesia and regional or local anesthesia. The type is chosen based on patient’s medical history and duration of planned operation and procedure. It is the job of anesthesiologist to determine if it is safe to proceed with the anesthetic and surgery devise as an anesthetic plan and determine the kind of anesthesia needed i.e. general anesthesia, or sedation or regional anesthesia. Regional anesthesia can be in the form of
Epidural or regional nerve block accompanied by intravenous sedation. An anesthesiologist ensures unconsciousness, monitors vitals during anesthesia, monitors and maintains level of oxygen in blood and CO2 in lungs, minimizes stress of response to operation, controls pain during surgery etc. Advances in medicine have made the practice of anesthesia very safe and have vastly minimized deaths related to anesthesia. The undergraduate students would be exposed to the basic of anesthesiology and would be train in administration of it in simple cases. This branch of medicine is vitally important and goes alongside all fields of surgery and childbirth.
